Nicky Basford is a semi-abstract painter whose subjects are the land and seascapes of West Cornwall where, until recently, she has been living and those of Provence where she is a frequent visitor.
Her paintings are freely executed, lyrical even, but always underpinned by a firm understanding of the principles of drawing and composition. They recall a place rather than reproduce it. She says, ‘for me, a piece of work succeeds, in part at least, if it resonates in the eye, mind or heart of the person looking at it.’
Light is a constant theme and inspiration in the work, both for its metaphorical possibilities and physical properties – the mesmeric beauty of an atlantic sunset or provencale dusk. Light at the edges of the day.
The artist currently lives and works in London.
